Misery for Midhurst is delight for Dorking

Midhurst had to field a changed team at home to Dorking Wanderers in the Sussex League division-two cup after the loss of Robert Browne to Chichester and Lewis Hyde to Pagham. The changes took their toll as the Stags lost 2-1.

They began on the front foot and Liam Dreckman had the ball in the visitors’ net after just nine minutes after he outran Shane Duffell and gave keeper Paul Williams little chance.

The visitors were finding it hard to make much impression on a Midhurst team welcoming back defender Jamie Angell after his recovery from a leg injury.

Home keeper Paul Williamson was giving a good display and the back four were not unduly troubled.

However Dorking were lifting the tempo and a moment’s indecision in defence saw Matt Evans level after 35 minutes.

Soon Williamson was drawn out of his area to give Evans an easy chance which he somehow put over the bar.

After the break, the referee was finding it hard to control some of the more robust play and booked Nathan Castleton.

With 15 minutes left Midhurst’s Lewis O’Callaghan was replaced by Ollie Pearce.

The referee showed a red card to Dreckman, reducing Midhurst to ten men.

The match went to extra time and in the first period Midhurst replaced Harry Monet with Dean Hilton Lush.

With ten minutes left, Bobby Hooper won it for Dorking with a well-taken goal.
