United chairman says management exit '˜brought tears to my eyes'

Manager Garry Wilson and assistant manager Danny Bloor stepped down after the football club’s Ryman League Division One South season ended last weekend.

“I was absolutely gutted,” said Ormerod, who added that he thought the club would make the play-offs. “It brought tears to my eyes. I was hoping they were going to stay for another two or three years, if not longer.

“I’ve been involved up there for most of the last 50 years and that’s the most upset I’ve ever been up there. I was so emotional I had to walk out the boadroom.”

Along with his fellow directors, Ormerod appointed Wilson as manager last May - less than two months after he succeeded Dave Walters as club owner.

Speaking yesterday (Wednesday), Ormerod said interest in the managerial vacancy had already been expressed and although next season doesn’t start until August, he is keen to appoint a successor to Wilson fairly soon.

“We’ve not advertised it yet, but we’ve had a few applications so far,” he continued. “We’ll see what applications come in and decide amongst ourselves which three or four we’re going to interview.

“I think we would like to get someone in as soon as possible; I would say within the next three weeks I would hope.”
