  • Important month lies ahead for Hastings United
  • U’s have nine matches scheduled for January
  • First up is a trip to struggling Peacehaven & Telscombe today
  • United are in 14th place with several games in hand
  • Hastings are eight points outside play-off spots at turn of year

The new year is upon us and January looks likely to be a key month in Hastings United Football Club’s season.

The U’s have nine matches scheduled for the first month of 2016 as they continue to play catch-up with their Ryman Football League Division One South fixtures.

And assuming the weather doesn’t play too much of a part, the results could well give us a much clearer idea of how United’s campaign is likely to pan out.

United reached the end of 2015 lying in 14th position, albeit having played between four and seven matches fewer than every other club in the division.

They are currently eight points adrift of the final play-off spot of fifth, but a decent haul of points from their games in hand would wipe out that deficit.

United’s recent form has been mixed with three wins, a draw and two defeats in their last six league matches, the latest of which was a 1-0 victory at home to Walton Casuals on Boxing Day. Billy Medlock came off the substitutes’ bench to score the all-important 76th minute winner.

Their scheduled trip to Molesey on Tuesday night was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch, meaning United won’t now reach the midway point in their league programme until visiting third-from-bottom Peacehaven & Telscombe today (Saturday).

With Peacehaven having recently cut their playing budget and conceded 19 goals in losing their most recent four outings, nothing but a win will do for United.

United’s development squad, meanwhile, will be in Ryman U21 League South Division action on Monday night at home to Whyteleafe. The academy side will travel to Margate in the Conference Youth Alliance B Division on Wednesday afternoon.
