Mitchell Dickenson, a left-sided central defender who lives in Maidstone, has joined United on a 30-day arrangement from the League One outfit and is expected to go straight into the squad for the visit from Whitstable Town tomorrow (Saturday).

The 19-year-old has been with Gillingham since the age of 13, and is known to be commanding in the air and composed in possession. United would like to thank Gillingham for sanctioning the loan signing.

A United spokesman said: “The club are conscious that they have a lot of games to play between now and the end of the season including, it hopes, play-off matches.

“In view of this, the club have been keen, as they have been throughout the season, to assist the management team’s building plans by making the ammunition available to strengthen and increase the size of the squad.”

Dickenson becomes the third player to join United on loan from a Football League club over the past two weeks following Brighton & Hove Albion duo Harry Doherty and Robin Deen.

His arrival comes at just the right time from a United point of view because central defender Jack Walder is about to start a five-match ban for his red card against Tooting & Mitcham United a fortnight ago.

United are currently two places and three points outside the Ryman Football League Division One South play-off positions, although they’ve played between two and four matches fewer than every other club in the division.

Having had eight matches postponed since Christmas, all of them away from home, United have eight games scheduled for the remainder of March and five of the next six after tomorrow will be on their travels.
