United target three out of three

The U’s have won their opening two Ryman Football League Division One South matches, scoring nine goals and conceding one.

United manager Wilson said: “It’s just been pleasing to get into a winning mentality. We’ve got a new team and you’re never quite sure, but already we’re seeing some partnerships forming, little links and players gelling all over the pitch, which is good.

“I’m pleased to get some positive results because you can’t afford in any league to be left behind early on. You need to try and be on the front foot, but we’re not carried away with it. There’s some good teams in this league and some hard games to come.”

While some supporters may delight in seeing United’s name at the top of the embryonic league table, Wilson isn’t paying much attention to it at this early stage.

“There’s 46 games and we’ve played two,” he continued. “When we’ve played 43 we can have a look, but at this moment in time you want to just stay with the front pack if you can.

“We’ve had a really good pre-season in terms of training. The coaches and all the backroom guys that help us have done well, and the players have trained really well.”

A feature of United’s play so far has been the threat they’ve posed in attack. The front two of Jack Harris and Zac Attwood have scored five goals between them, and Sam Cole has already netted three from midfield.

“I’ve had Coley for a number of years and he will get goals, as well as the front two,” Wilson added.

Next up for United is a trip to Chatham Town today (Saturday). Chatham won 4-0 at Peacehaven & Telscombe last weekend - when United had the Kent side watched - but then lost 2-1 at home to South Park on Tuesday.

Jerome Smith is away, but Harvey Hanifan and Tyrell Richardson-Brown are expected to return. Stephen Okoh could feature if his international clearance comes through in time and Tom Vickers is back at the club.

“He (Vickers) looks a little bit fitter and sharper than when I had him at Lewes, and I think he can be an asset,” said Wilson.
