The Westies scored five in the first half and four in the second as they won 9-2 away to Alfold in Macron Store Southern Combination Football League Division Two.

Westfield manager Jack Stapley said: “The performance was really good, probably one of our best performances of the season. We were right on top from the first whistle, and we just kept going and going. It should’ve been a minimum of 12, 13 really; we missed some absolute howlers.”

Alfold sought to play out from the back, but Westfield pressed high and forced them to go long. Westfield’s centre-halves dominated in the air and the visitors duly bossed the game.

Stapley felt his team could’ve been four-up before they opened the scoring as Westfield continually troubled an Alfold team which persisted with a three-man defence.

All of Westfield’s goals were well-worked team efforts featuring some good build-up play. Asher Grindle and Callum Smith both hit hat-tricks, taking their goal tallies for the season to nine and 15 respectively, Sam Ellis bagged a brace and Josh Carey got the other during a brief substitute appearance.

Grindle’s hat-trick goal came from a brilliant cross by Martyn Durrant, while Ellis’ first was at the end of a move containing around 15 passes.

The two goals Westfield conceded - one in either half - stemmed from individual errors.

Westfield are up to fifth in the table with 19 points from their first nine games and they will be targeting a sixth home victory out of six in all competitions when they host 10th-placed Clymping this coming Saturday. Kick-off at The Parish Field is 3pm.

Westfield: H. Stapley; McGuigan, Dadswell, Dicken, Durrant; Winter, Ward, Ellis (Barrett); Adams (Carey (J. Stapley)), Grindle, Smith.
