Wick suffer two away defeats

WICK Football Club failed to build on impressive wins over Redhill and Three Bridges and suffered two defeats on the road against sides near the bottom of County League Division 1.

After a 2-1 defeat at relegation-fighting St Francis Rangers on Saturday, Wick went down 1-0 at Hailsham on Tuesday evening.

It was a night to forget in a hurry for Wick on Tuesday. Manager Gary Block had problems with his van en-route to the game, so was unable to make it and midfielder Seb Baggura then had to pull out of the starting line-up in the warm-up with a hamstring injury.

George Gaskin, who has returned to the club from Worthing, had Wick’s best chance in the first half but saw his one-on-one effort saved.

Wick failed to create any clear opportunities in the second period and Hailsham netted the only goal with 15 minutes left.

Wick assistant boss Dave Berkowitz said: “We had a few problems before the game but sometimes that galvanises a side. However, we just didn’t get going, which was a shame.”

Manager Block was frustrated after his side’s defeat at St Francis on Saturday.

Wick missed first-half chances through Gaskin, Michael Frangou and Jack Beadle before Gaskin put Wick ahead from Baggura’s pass on 55 minutes.

A Lois Pople double gave Rangers the lead, before Frangou, Michael Asare and Rob Wimble all missed equalising chances.

Block said: “We didn’t play very well and it’s very frustrating after taking seven points in games against three of the top-half sides.

“We didn’t work hard enough and let them play. We switched off twice and we need to take responsibility more.

“We could have been three or four up at half-time and when you miss chances and give goals away, you’re going to lose.

“Although Rob Wimble pulled out in the warm-up, we’ve the quality to get the results so there’s no excuse.”
