Douglas Bines aced the downhill par three seventh at the Bexhill-based course last Friday.

Many accomplished players have gone through entire golfing careers without a hole-in-one so for Douglas to achieve the feat at such an advanced age is a truly outstanding feat.

In other news, on one of the best Saturdays of the year so far, 150 competitors turned out to play in Peter Mead’s Captain’s Day at Highwoods.

The event got under way at 8am and a couple of the early starters posted scores of 40 stableford points, which laid down a challenge for the rest of the field to beat.

By the end of a wonderful day’s golf, the top five finishers were all on 40 points and countback was needed to separate them.

The overall winner was Michael Roche, who edged out runner-up Barry Pigram, third-placed Kevin Belbin, fourth-placed Gary Neate and fifth-placed Paul Sanger. John Hannah came sixth with 39 points.

A week earlier, 54 Highwoods ladies played in an equivalent competition, which was won by Gillian Crawley with 38 points. Alison Bough was the runner-up with 37 points, Hannah Duval came third with 36 and Lesley Vernon was fourth with 35.

A celebration dinner, hosted by Mead, took place in the evening. A very busy room of members and guests enjoyed the prize-giving ceremony, followed by a gourmet meal, before dancing the night away.

A big vote of thanks is due to Dave and Doreen Upwood for laying on a captain’s quiz at a club night which raised £388 for Macmillan Cancer Support. The sum has been match funded by a local branch of the HSBC bank.

Highwoods hosted the men’s Daily Mail Foursomes qualifying competition on Sunday.
