Cooden drive neighbours off course

The final day of the Ryder Cup paled into insignificance against the annual battle between Cooden Beach Golf Club and neighbours Highwoods for the Bexhill Challenge Cup.

Because of the Ryder Cup, the match was curtailed to just one round of fourball betterball matchplay with both sides playing off scratch.

Four matches were played at Highwoods and four at Cooden, and with the weather ideal at both venues, Cooden got off to a great start with the home matches all being won.

Peter Bradshaw and David Relf won 1 up in a close match against Paul Sanger and Harry Bradbury, while Martin Thompson and Jeff Reed were comfortable 3&2 winners against Sam Smith and Jack Duval.

Ian Witham and Mark Greenaway turned round a topsy-turvy match against Graham White and Nigel Cooper to win 1 up, and Trevor Wood and Wayne Russell triumphed 3&2 against Andy Lamb and Norman Carberry.

Doug Park and Scott Valentine led off for Cooden at Highwoods, and recorded a 4&3 success against veteran Andy Ross and Ali Anderson.

Roy Stephenson and Clive White halved with Ed Bergin and Josh Armstrong, while Kevin Williams and Simon Catley won 1 up against Highwoods team captain Paul Sharpington and Mark Feery.

Jim Cooper and Mike Cotton regained some local pride for Highwoods with a 7&6 victory over Cooden Beach captain Steve Bedwell and Nigel Hole, making the overall result 6½-1½ in Cooden’s favour.
