Past Captain’s day at Mannings Heath

Seventeen former club captains spanning thirty-five years gathered at Mannings Heath on Friday for the Past Captains’ Day competition.

Winner of the Captain’s Putter with an excellent 41 points was Tony Bauckham followed by Dave Read and Trevor Loftus and there was plenty of convivial banter afterwards as reminiscences flowed and old friendships were renewed at the traditional black tie dinner.

Saturday’s Men’s Invitation saw Martin Kennell and his guest Mark Cooper post an impressive 46 points in their morning better-ball round on Waterfall and follow it with 39 points on Kingfisher in greensome foursomes.

Their 85 point total put them three clear of Rob Sloman and Mike Brook with Graham Hill and Jon Pope a further point behind in third place.

The Ladies began teeing off at 5.30 for their traditional mid-summer Early Bird competition on Kingfisher but there was nothing sleepy about the golf as Susan Jaggard carded 37 points to pip Rosemary Martin on countback.

On Thursday they were back on Kingfisher again for the David Burroughs salver with sixteen-handicap Sam Barnes carding seven pars in her 38 points to claim the trophy on countback from Bronze Divison winner Jenny Rees playing off twenty-one. Second and third places in the Silver Division went to Lynne Jones and Joy Reineck with 37 and 35 respectively, and in the Bronze echelon to Sue Endacott and Meriel Jolley with 35 and 34.

Heath’s over-55 squad meanwhile travelled to The Dyke for the second round of the Gilbert Print Plate having already beaten their opponents at home in the first round of the main competition, the Cyril Blake Foursomes.

A strong Dyke team exacted revenge on their own course by 2½ - 1½ with Steve Wild and Roger Bridge securing Heath’s only win.

There was better fortune though for the club’s junior team as they pulled off a stunning away win at Royal Eastbourne in the quarter finals of the Alan Covey Cup, the county’s inter-club foursomes competition for under-18s. With scores level at 2-2 Ali Crunden and Jamie Dart kept their nerve superbly to send Heath’s youngsters through in a sudden death play-off .
