King reigns at national champs

Yolanda King claimed singles glory at the Butterfly National Schools Individual Table Tennis Championships.

It was fairly plain sailing for the Hastings-based talent as she won the under-16 girls’ singles at The Bowl, Doncaster, on Saturday.

After beating Janay Gibson (Cheshire) 11-8, 11-7, 11-8 in the semi-finals, King met Vicky Smith (Devon), who had defeated her at the recent English Senior Open.

The Weald TTC member got sweet revenge, however, comfortably winning 11-7, 12-14, 11-5, 11-6. She faltered only briefly in the second when losing straight points after leading 4-1 and failing to take game points at deuce.

King, a former Claremont School pupil, then flew to Linz on Sunday to represent England in the Joola Austrian Junior and Cadet Open.

Josh Bennett, of Hollington Table Tennis Club, lost 1-3 to Tom Jarvis (Lincolnshire) in the semi-finals of the under-11 boys’ singles.
