Beauport Park pair Gary Begbie and Robert Wheeler have won the prestigious 2014 Nike Matchplay golf tournament at Vale do Lobo in Portugal.
Having finished sixth at the Golf Care Grand Final in Dubai last May, the pair came out on top over four nervy rounds on the Ocean and Royal courses at the south coast resort.
Begbie and Wheeler put themselves in contention by securing 42 Stableford points in their opening round of betterball play. This was then improved with 39 points in their second round and 41 in their third, leaving them 14-under and four off the lead going into the final round.
The final day’s play was on the Ocean Course, and despite a level par front nine, the Beauport duo were still three behind after 12 holes. They managed to turn it around, though, with birdies on the 13th and 16th to sneak a one-shot lead going up the last.
Their rivals then birdied the final hole of the tournament to heap the pressure on Begbie and Wheeler, but five handicapper Wheeler managed to convert his par putt to give them an extraordinary final round score of 46 points, and in doing so secured victory on countback.
