South Saxons captain Paddy Cornish didn’t regard last weekend’s draw as two points dropped.

The South Hockey League Sussex Area - Division One leaders were held 2-2 at home by fourth-placed Lewes III after conceding a last minute equaliser.

Saxons captain Paddy Cornish said: “It’s not two points dropped at all, it was a good point in the end. They definitely fielded a stronger side than what they probably have done in most of their league games this year.

“We all thought it was a well-earned draw really and everyone’s attitude was a lot better this week. I think it helps playing tougher opposition. I think when we get annoyed is when we play against some of the lower teams.”

Although still unbeaten, Saxons are now only two points clear of second-placed Horsham II going into their final game before the festive break away to third-bottom Middleton & Bognor tomorrow (Saturday).

“We want to keep that two-point difference at Christmas,” added Cornish. “It’s a game that we would expect to win, but we always tend to have a bit of a hard game down there.”

Sam Bunday, pictured, hurt his shoulder as a result of a barge in the back against Lewes, but is expected to be fit for a fixture in which Saxons have recorded two wins and a draw in the previous three seasons.
