South Saxons got their South Hockey League Sussex Area - Division One season off to a flying start.

The runners-up for the past two campaigns pulled off a crushing 10-4 victory against Penguin at a scorching Horntye Park Sports Complex on Saturday.

Saxons were actually 2-0 down after 15 minutes and had Toby Reed yellow carded for arguing with the umpire, but fought their way back to lead 3-2 at half time and went on to dominate the second period.

Jamie Busbridge made an earlier than expected return from injury to score four goals and be named man of the match, Dave Draper bagged a hat-trick, and there was one each for Paddy Cornish, Rob Whitehouse and Dan Burnett.

A full report will appear in Friday’s Hastings Observer.

Saxons: Deaves, Towers, Reed, Eldridge, Rogers, Cload, Coombs, Burnett, Whitehouse, Busbridge, Draper, Cornish.

Other results: Crawley II 2 Brighton & Hove III 1; Crowborough 6 Eastbourne II 3; East Grinstead IV 2 Horsham II 4; Lewes III 8 Middleton & Bognor 2; Southwick 2 Hailsham 3.
