South Saxons went top of the table after their biggest win so far this season - a 4-0 success at home to Horsham III - on Saturday.

Saxons made it 13 points from a possible 15 in South Hockey League Sussex Area - Division One with their first victory by more than a one-goal margin.

From the off Saxons dominated with some slick passing and fast attacks, but the first goal was somewhat elusive until Dan Burnett forced his way into the D and sent a rocket of a shot past the Horsham goalkeeper.

Once the deadlock had been broken, Saxons expected their dominance to open the floodgates, but the Horsham defence did enough to disrupt the home forwards. Julian Buss came close with a blind turn and shot, and half time came with just the single goal separating the sides.

Saxons started the second half knowing that they just had to keep doing the same things and the goals would come. Their pressure forced defensive errors and from one of the resulting short corners, George Eldridge scored after the initial shot had been saved.

The two-goal lead allowed Saxons to push further upfield and this increased the pressure on the Horsham defence. Two further goals were forthcoming, both scored by Jamie Busbridge, one with assistance from man of the match Dom Ford, who appeared in the opposition D from full-back.
