Steve, who was 65, was a long-standing and popular member of Lewes RFC. He has died after a long-time illness.

Steve was a fast-running winger who played many games for his beloved club, including several for the first XV, and carried on playing for the veterans’ XV until his retirement from playing.

A club spokesman said: “After he stopped playing, Steve continued his many contributions to the club, ranging from treasurer to bar and catering manager, and his efforts in supporting LRFC will never be forgotten.

“Over the past few months, Steve maintained contact with several of his old friends from the club, who used to meet him regularly in his home town of Seaford for seafront walks and chats about the old days, no doubt.

“The Club sends its deepest sympathies and condolences to Jo and her family in these difficult times for all.

“So ends a year in which Lewes RFC said goodbye to several former stalwarts who had formed the back-bone of what was at the time the strongest rugby club in Sussex.”
