Pirates hold on to title

East Grinstead Flyers 65Bognor Pirates II 87BOGNOR Pirates have retained their league title after a tense final week of the season. Any of three teams could have won the league. Pirates, having beaten Flyers, had to rely on Hailsham beating Brighton the following evening.

Bognor started with a full-strength squad for their final game, needing to clinch a league-winning victory.

They came out of the blocks firing with Dave Turner hitting two long three-pointers and Lee Barnes controlling the game from the point. Bognor sped to a 25-14 lead at the end of the first quarter.

In the second, Pirates continued to dominate the Flyers at both ends of the floor with Turner continuing his shooting form from all ranges and Richard Lowe and Andy Aung dominating the paint. Bognor held a convincing 45-25 lead at the end of the first half.

Bognor continued their dominance in the third quarter, moving the ball directly and flawlessly on offence with great hustle and ruthlessness on defence. Paul Sparrowhawk got into gear from outside with Lowe inching his way around the key.

Pirates sealed their win with an effective last quarter, resisting some of the Flyers' retaliation while using the whole squad to clinch a big win.
