Robertson falls at final hurdle
Jimmy Robertson fell at the final hurdle in his quest to reach the Betfred World Snooker Championship.
The Bexhill cueman was beaten 10-2 by Alan McManus in the final round of the qualifiers having pulled off highly impressive victories in the previous two rounds.
Robertson would have gone into the final round match full of confidence, but got off to the worst possible start by losing the first five frames in the opening session yesterday (Tuesday). McManus’s top break during that sequence was an 85 in frame three.
World number 36 Robertson got himself on the scoreboard by winning frame six aided by a run of 60 only for experienced 29th-ranked Scottish potter McManus to clinch the next two with breaks of 79 and 59.
Robertson did at least manage to claim the final frame of the first session with the help of a 52 break to leave him trailing 7-2 overnight.
A fast start to today’s second session was essential if Robertson was to stand any chance of pulling off an unlikely turnaround, but he scored just 26 points in what proved to be the final three frames as McManus completed a comfortable victory aided by a 62 break in frame 11.
Robertson hit three century breaks and six other runs over 50 on his way to a 10-5 victory over Stuart Carrington in round two on Sunday having whitewashed Welsh amateur Tyler Rees 10-0 in round one last Thursday.
The 29-year-old has qualified for the World Championship on two occasions in the past. He lost to Marco Fu in round one at The Crucible last year and Mark Selby in 2011.
