Mitchell's side had got to the final with losing a game but going for gold was a step too far as the pre-tournament favourites lived up to their billing. And in winning, Fiji picked up their first ever Olympic medal.

It was an ominous start from Fiji, who scored twice in the first three minutes with Osea Kolinisau and Jerry Tuwai going over and the former kicked one of the two conversions to make it 12-0.

It could have got worse seconds after the second try, but Mitchell pulled off a brilliant last ditch tackle to deny the Fijians just yards from the line.

But with three minutes of the first half left, Jasa Veremalua went over to make it 17-0. And it was becoming a little to easy for the favourites as they made it 27-0 by half time with tries from Leone Nakarawa and Vatemo Ravouvou.

Josua Tuisova made it 36-0 early in the second half before Team GB finally got on the board when Dan Norton scored. Marcus Watson added the two bonus points.

But Viliame Mata finished the scoring with the final score being 43-7.
