SAILING

THE sheltered waters of the Solent were the setting for a battle of the sexes that saw a female crew carry off the top prize in St Richard's Hospital's annual regatta for the first time.

Gybe Talking '“ the only all-girl boat in the event '“ won the first two races and was second in the last one to come home overall champion by a significant margin.

Eleven Sunfast 37 yachts took part in the event, which raised more than 15,000 for the hospital's cancer day unit appeal.

Each yacht was crewed by up to eight people of mixed sailing abilities. The day started with a lively practice session followed by three hard-fought races.

Appeal chairman Annie Simson said: "It was a beautiful day and a superb event. It could not have been more fun."

The winning crew was organised by Beverley Coghlan, of Eastergate, wife of a former consultant at St Richard's. She was jubilant, as only one of her crew was a regular sailor.
