A victory for Saxons in their final match of the season at home to ninth-placed East Grinstead III tomorrow (Saturday) will secure top spot in Sussex Open Hockey League Division One.

Saxons captain Jamie Busbridge said: “We’re really happy to be in this position and hopefully we can see it through on Saturday.”

The Hastings club has an identical win-draw-loss record as second-placed Southwick, but Saxons lead the way by virtue of a vastly superior goal difference.

Saxons were 7-1 winners in December’s reverse fixture against East Grinstead and are set to field a strong 13-man squad for the return match tomorrow including Harry Reece, who is back from university.

“They’re not a terrible side and we played really well that day,” added Busbridge, who admitted he would rather have played the game last weekend to avoid a two-week gap between matches. “Hopefully we can reproduce that on Saturday.”

Push-back at Horntye Park is 1.30pm.
