Saxons moving in right direction

South Saxons have taken a step in the right direction according to captain Paddy Cornish.

After winning two and losing two of their first four South Hockey League Sussex Area - Division One matches in 2012, Saxons ran out 6-0 victors at home to Southwick last weekend.

Cornish said: “It was a step in the right direction. There was no arguing with each other and we weren’t even bickering with the other team or umpires. But the proof will be this week going away and having to do it all again.”

Second-placed Saxons remain four points behind leaders Horsham II, who avoided a potential banana skin last weekend by winning 3-1 away to third-placed Lewes III to make it eight consecutive victories.

While not helping Saxons’ bid for the title and with it automatic promotion, that result does at least mean if Saxons do miss out on top spot, they are highly likely to finish second and go into a promotion play-off.

“We’re pretty much safe for second place and we’re just hoping that Horsham can slip up somewhere,” continued Cornish, who will add Dom Ford to the squad for the trip to eighth-placed Crowborough tomorrow (Saturday).
