Sidley edge clear despite heavy defeat

SIDLEY Cricket Club went down by 10 wickets on Saturday, but it wasn't all doom and gloom as they actually extended their cushion over basement boys Worthing.

The Gullivers outfit picked up eight points, while Worthing could only manage a single point as they suffered an eight wicket drubbing at Bexhill.

Sidley are now 19 points clear of the West Sussex side with two games to go in the race to avoid the wooden spoon and possible relegation.

Sidley amassed 183 in their latest match against Haywards Heath thanks to a 78-run partnership for the fourth wicket between skipper Jonathan Haffenden (16) and Peter King (51).

Phil Bryant (36) and Mark Gransden (26) gave the hosts something to bowl at by sharing 58 for the seventh wicket only for Sam Gilmour (5-32) to take three wickets in four balls.

There was no wicket-taking whatsoever after tea, though, as the Heath opening pair completely dominated the Sidley attack.

Stuart Faith and Tom Dowdell set the tone from the start by taking 26 off the first three overs. The 50 came up in the 10th over, 100 in the 19th, 150 in the 27th and the target was reached with two fours and a bye off the first three balls of the 31st.

The stylish Faith struck 13 boundaries in his 69 not out, while the more aggressive Dowdell hit 20 fours and a six in his unbeaten 103.
