Surfing success runs in the family thanks to Lucy

A 16-year-old from Birdham is following in the family footsteps by sampling surfing success.

Lucy Howell travelled to the Isle of Wight with dad Adrian to compete in the South Coast Surfing Championships at Compton Bay.

She has been competing all year in the Devon series – The Hotdoggers – and the Blu (British Longboard Union), which count towards the overall British title. She was third among the under-18 girls.

Having waited nearly all day to get in the water on the island, Lucy took to the waves. The surf was big and the youngsters were encouraged to catch the smaller reform waves.

She got through her heats and did well in the final and at the presentation she was delighted to hear she had come first – winning a trophy and a new surfboard.

Dad Adrian was second in the open longboard.

The competition season has almost ended but a hard winter of training and fitness lies ahead and Lucy aims to win the British title next year.
