Vets from Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust visit West Sussex

ARUNDEL Equine Veterinary Hospital had a visit this year by staff from the Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust

Colin Tait, a vet at Arundel, has a particular interest in the work of then trust, a charity which was founded in 2002.

The population of the Gambia is only small, with around 1.5 million people, mostly peasant farmers. They keep are around 50,000 donkeys and 30,000 horses. Equines are relatively new in the Gambia and consequently a lack of knowledge on how to care for them can result in suffering.

The aim of the Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust is to reduce rural poverty by increasing productivity of working horses and donkeys through animal welfare and management education.

The Arundel practice gave two of the Gambian team, Momodou Cham ( clinic manager) and Amadou Jallow ( laboratory technician) the opportunity to see the practice in action in this country with both donkeys and horses.
