WICKERS INTO CUP FINAL

SOUTHWICK upset the form book somewhat last Wednesday evening when they reached the RUR Cup Final with a battling display against runaway County League leaders Burgess Hill at Hassocks' Beacon Ground.

Prior to the game, Wickers manager Sammy Donnelly had stressed the importance of teamwork throughout his side, claiming that his players were as good individually as Hillians' but needed to work harder in order to gain the victory.

And so it proved, especially in a second half where Burgess Hill held the majority of possession but only rarely saw the whites of Wickers keeper Phil Reid's eyes .

Just past the hour, Ashley Carr found himself with time to head goalwards, but his effort was trapped and repelled from the line by Southwick's monumental skipper, Mark Burt. And, with eight minutes left, Ben Andrews sent a free kick round the wall, only for Reid to dash across and scoop the ball round the post.
