Visitors cannot enter Knepp Castle near Horsham as it is a private home, but the estate runs a rewilding project and offers safaris and camping options.

6. Knepp Castle
Knepp Estate, just south of Horsham, has been owned by the Burrells for over 220 years. At its core, overlooking Knepp Lake, is a castle built by the architect John Nash, which remains the family home. The estate runs a rewilding project which you can visit. Photo: Haywards Heath
7. Ypres Tower/Rye Castle
The Ypres Tower was built in 1249 to defend Rye against attacks from across the channel. It has served as a fort, private dwelling, prison, court hall and now finally as a museum.
8. Herstmonceux Castle
This brick-built castle is from the 15th century and is located near Herstmonceux, East Sussex. It is one of the oldest significant brick buildings still standing in England.
