More influential if we were out

Keith Hillier-Palmer implies peace in Europe comes only through political union (22/4/16) yet peace comes from mutual respect and global free trade.

Indeed, under the UN Charter, 160-plus nations (generally!) live and trade in peace outside political union!

More inconvenient facts follow:

The EU despises democracy, especially referenda.

In Putinesque-fashion, it threatens non-EU Switzerland for electing curbs on EU-immigration; Hungary for enforcing Shengen borders; penalised Austria (now threatens Poland and Portugal) for democratically electing ‘right wing’ anti-EU parties to government; imposed budget controls on Italy and Greece, and sides with Greece over the illegal Greek-led coup in 1974 of the lawful joint Greece-Turkey administration of Cyprus, forcing Turkey’s ‘invasion’ to protect Turkish-Cypriot rights.

The supranational Austro-Hungarian empire’s contempt led to WWI; the Versailles Treaty drove Hitler to restore Germanic unity and encourage Russia to jointly reclaim Poland starting WWII.

Into both wars, Britain and France were drawn through defence treaties with Belgium and Poland.

America entered both wars ‘three years late’ only when her sovereignty was attacked.

Britain devised Germany’s basic law and PR government to prevent another Hitler, leaving Germany with a self-defence force with it and Europe protected by NATO – not by the EEC/EU!

The American-led UN Marshall Plan sought restoration of a united Germany to the economic powerhouse of Europe, much to the chagrin of France and Russia leading to the Cold War.

To accept the spurious ‘50 years of peace in Europe’, we must ignore history!

Northern Ireland, the Basques, Catalans, The Balkans, Cyprus, Spanish claims to Gibraltar are consequences of a modern Europe of newly republican nations (many under 100 years old) seeking independence from dominant masters yet, today, they (and Scotland!) surrender independence to a Utopian socialist EU master driven by unelected Commissioners. Most un-American!

When conflicts occur, it is America, Britain, France and UN-led peace-keeping forces which unhesitatingly intervene.

Britain would be more influential and safer as an independent sovereign nation within NATO but outside the EU with its shambolic ‘common defence and foreign policy’ which, today, pays non-EU Turkey to police EU borders.
