Catsfield Fete and Flower Show: Tomorrow’s the BIG EVENT of the year in the village and we keep our fingers tightly crossed for good weather, especially after such an un-summer kind of week. Plans are made, the marquee erected, show entries prepared and cakes are being baked for the cake stall at this moment. Contributions for any of the stalls (bric-a-brac, bottles, books, tombola prizes etc) will be gratefully received and can be taken to Vanessa at the playing field between 6 – 7pm this evening. The Fete starts at 1.30pm and the Show Tent opens at 2pm – 4pm. Entries can be staged in the marquee from 8.30am – 10.30am after which the tent will be closed for judging. The dance in the evening will again feature ‘The Swing Street Band’ and even if you’re not a dancer, it’s great entertainment and a chance to enjoy a lovely social village get-together. Doors will open at 7.30pm and the band kicks off at 7.45pm- 11pm. You are invited to bring a picnic, but not drink as there will be a licenced bar available.

Thanks to Ann Davey for the following: An outline planning application no: RR/2015//1760/P has been submitted for north-east Bexhill, including 1,050 residential dwellings (30% affordable), school, infrastructure, vehicular access to the link road etc. and there are only twenty-one days in which to lodge comments. If you are concerned, the application can be viewed electronically or at Battle or Rye Libraries. Rumours abound as to the allocation of the houses and perhaps it would be worth enquiring of your local District Councillor or MP.

Former correspondent: Former Village Voice correspondent for Catsfield, Patricia Speedy visited for a short holiday and said how much she still enjoys reading V.Voice. It was lovely to meet up with her and although she lives in a town in Devon, she was amazed at the speed and amount of traffic we suffer in this rural area. Just imagine how much worse it will be when the planned expansion of the area goes ahead?

Claverham College: celebrated its sixtieth year on Monday with a splendid tea party for as many of its first pupils who saw the call. The food was cooked by the College pupils and was a huge improvement on the dreary things we had to make. We were entertained by prefects and heads of houses, who all showed great pride in their education as they showed us around the classrooms. The old vaulting horse was still visible and I remember the terror of launching yourself off the wooden springboard and being helped over by the PE teacher. Obviously, the College has changed a great deal, but we can all be proud of its reputation in the area. How wonderful to see two of the original teachers Peter and Valerie Ballard at the tea party, they both had a big influence on us and it was good to see the affection with which they were greeted at the party.

Rain stopped play: Sadly, the rain put paid to cricket last Sunday at Ashburnham, the next match being at Sedlescombe on Sunday after the Flower Show.

Mobile Library: The Mobile Library will be outside the Village Hall in Church Road in its usual place from 11.55am – 12.30pm today, 31st July.
