New bus for Battle transport charity

A transport charity serving the residents of Battle and the surrounding area unveiled its new bus, ‘Betty’, on Thursday (November 12).

The Battle Area Community Transport named its latest addition after Betty King who donated generously towards the bus.

The charity help residents who struggle to get around in villages in and around Battle, Burwash and Ticehurst.

Chairman Colin Harmer thanked everyone who had given towards the new bus at the ceremony at Robertsbridge Village Hall.

“Mrs King’s very generous legacy enabled us to purchase a vehicle which is fully accessible and is more modern and driver-friendly,” he said.

“We chose to unveil it at the Robertsbridge Hall, as Mrs King and her husband were both heavily involved in raising the funds to build the hall, over 30 years ago.

“We would also like to thank, all of our supporters who enabled us to purchase this bus, including the Rother community grants scheme, the Sussex Community Foundation and the local parish and town councils, without whom we would not have been in a position to fund this and continue to provide our necessary local services to the rural community.”

The charity relies on volunteers to both drive the buses and act as directors and urgently needs more drivers.

If you have a current full driving license with a D1 category and are able to commit some time each month to provide this service call Peter on 01424 772001.

All training will be provided.
