New Rye housing development shortlisted for award

A new housing development in the heart of Rye has been shortlisted for a prestigious award.

The architects behind the new building on Cinque Ports Street has been named among 11 others on shortlist for Royal Institute of British Architects’ (RIBA) South East 2016 Awards.

Rye-based Jonathan Dunn Architects (JDA) designed the development consisting of eight flats, a detached three-bed house, two bed-flat, plus two retail units.

Lead architect Rob Pollard is delighted to receive some recognition.

“We’ve been lucky enough to have a few letters from residents saying they are enjoying living there,” he said.

“We started on this in 2011 and have put a lot of time and effort in to do something different.

“We know not everyone is going to like it and you can’t please evryone but it’s nice to get some recogntion and know people appreciate what you are doing.”

The building was chosen out of 32 entrants to be shortlisted for the award.

Mr Pollard said he took inspiration from the varied heights and styles of the Citadel’s architecture which meant his design could be more ‘flexible’.

JDA won the same award last year for the Kino Cinema on Lion Street and Mr Pollard is hoping to repeat the success.

All shortlisted buildings will be assessed by a regional jury with the winning buildings announced at an awards evening and reception at Ascot Racecourse on Thursday. April 28.

Regional Award winners will be considered for a highly-coveted RIBA National Award in recognition of their architectural excellence, the results of which will be announced in June.

The shortlist for the RIBA Stirling Prize for the best building of the year will be drawn from the RIBA National Award-winning buildings later in the year.
