'˜Perilous' Rye road meeting agreed

Residents sick of speeding motorists '˜endangering children and the elderly' in Rye have organised a meeting to discuss possible changes.

Neighbours campaigning for traffic calming measures on A259 New Road will be meeting Highways England alongside supportive councillors later this month.

The New Road Action Group lobbied Rye Town Council at its meeting on Monday (October 31) and councillors unanimously backed the cause.

The campaign began two months ago with a packed meeting at Rye Rugby Club and action group committee member Richard Benn said they have done well to get this far so quickly.

“We have been very lucky to get a meeting with Highways England so we’re pleased and hopefully we will get some decent recognition and get something done before there’s a tragedy. The road is so perilous – it needs to be sorted out,” he said.

The residents decided to do something about speeding on the road as many fear crossing, especially senior citizens, and some parents do not let their children walk to school because of the issue.

Mr Benn said around 80 people came to the rugby club to discuss the problems in September and the action group was set up.

Former county council leader Keith Glazier and Rother District Council chairman Paul Osborne, both Rye councillors, support them and will accompany them at the Highways England discussions.

Rye Town Council decided to send two of its members as well in the bid for traffic calming measures.

A Highways England spokesman said: “Safety is Highways England’s top priority and we continue to keep safety of the A259 in Rye under review, as we do on all of our roads.

“We look forward to meeting with the residents to hear their views.”
